What are Meditation & Mindfulness?

According to Shapiro (1982), “ meditation refers to a family of techniques which have in common a conscious attempt to focus attention in a non-analytical way and an attempt not to dwell on discursive, ruminating thought”. There are many types of meditation techniques and/or ways to meditate such as breathing meditation; walking meditation or Loving Kindness meditation for example. While Meditation is rooted in spirituality and religion and can be traced at least 5000 years ago, Mindfulness was created in the West about fifty years ago to help people live life more peacefully. The spiritual aspect has almost gone from Mindfulness and the focus is on being completely open and with acceptance, observing what comes.

As well as my teacher training with the School of Positive Transformation, I have practised meditation for over twenty years and specialised in Mindful Self-Compassion with the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion in 2019. I am currently broadening my knowledge in Somatic Self-Compassion with HEARTWORKS and Kristy Arbon.
